Last time we talked about how building and keeping a team is important. Today we are going to talk about environmental controls. I believe it’s what set this factory on a different path.
The Fashion Revolution isn't just about looking good. It's about feeling good about the way you represent yourself and your values.
Last post we talked about how we as a small start up ethical jewelry brand were able to vet and choose a certified factory to produce our jewelry. And naturally it lets to the question, “Why are large brands are still using factories with substandard working conditions and unfair wages?”
The first step in making ethical jewelry is having a fair and safe workplace.
The factory we use maintains 3rd party certification for:
- ISO 9001 standard which covers quality and safety. The result is a great quality jewelry and many local awards for going years without serious worker injury. Employee satisfaction is demonstrated by low turnover with the average employment time being over two years.
- ISO14001 which covers the factory's environmental management systems. The result is that the factory's air and water are stringently filtered to make sure the local environment is not polluted. In fact the factory's waste water is used to irrigate their two on site soccer fields.
It is also a member of SEDEX which is an ethical trade service organization which conducts the SMETA audit which looks at import points such as the ability of employees to air grievances, the ratio of males to females in management positions, and other key points such a specific Worker Well Being Assessment.
So much about the world is unfair. The amount of waste, the way women are treated…it’s all so unjust. But it doesn't have to be that way. It’s time for a revolution in the fashion industry.
